(c. 1607, Gorinchem - 1 June 1681, Rotterdam) was a Dutch Golden Age painter He was born into a family of artists, and learned to paint from his father Herman, along with his brothers Abraham and Herman Saftleven the Younger. He lived for a time in Utrecht with his brother. Saftleven's subject matter covered various subjects, including genre works, portraits, beach scenes, and biblical and mythological themes. In the 1860s Lear described himself as 'Greek Topographical Painter par excellence', aspiring to the title of 'Painter-Laureate and Boshproducing-Luminary forthwith' (quoted in 1983 exh. cat., p. 14). This whimsical summary of his versatile activities as topographical draughtsman, oil painter, traveller, writer and illustrator of nonsense rhymes and stories is typical of Lear's idiosyncratic literary style. Mauritz Lindstrom
(26 April 1849 - 11 December 1923) was a Swedish painter. He was born in Västmanland and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, in 1869 - 72. He went to Munchen and Paris to continue his studies, and lived in England from early 1880s to 1889. Lindström is best known today for his landscapes.
